Who are the 5 People You Spend the Most Time With?
One thing that I have learned from the entirety of my studies and general interaction within the location independent and digital entrepreneur communities is the concept that you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. For most of these last few years, I have put the concept on the back burner and worked endlessly on this or that learning all that I could about how to utilize the internet as a platform to do all parts of business.
I am preparing for my final semester of school. The idea of those 5 people has come to mean more than something you just simply put aside. From previous posts, I am sure that you have noticed that I love to listen and learn new things from people who host podcast shows.
One of these podcasts that I only recently began listening to is EOFire with John Lee Dumas. The reason that I bring his podcast up is one, that it always provided useful and actionable content, and two, that he signs off each and every podcast with the comment that you (the listener) are the average of the 5 people who you spend the most time with and have been spending it with JLD (John Lee Dumas) and whoever he has on the show for that day. There the idea is again…
I remember at the beginning of my journey, I read a book called “The Laptop Millionaire: How Anyone Can Escape the 9 to 5 and Make Money Online” by Mark Anastasi which was my first glimpse into the concept because in his book he discusses how once he began seeking out those great and successful people and getting to know him, he also grew in greatness and success.
Grow your Team!
I wanted to share this with everyone not necessarily as a claim that I have come up with this brilliant new concept but that this older and constant companion to success needed to be discussed again. The idea that “you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with” has always been bouncing around the business world but it seems that when I have talked with others that are starting their own entrepreneurial journey, they are determined that they must go at it alone or not at all. This could not be further from the truth.
The path to true success and the ability to make a difference in the world lies in your own abilities. You can surround yourself with other great people. They keep you thinking and inspire you to be your greatest self. If you ask practically any successful person in business how they became successful, they will tell you that they themselves became successful because they saw what their own shortcomings were and managed to find people who fulfilled this missing skill set in order for the final group’s success.
Who is Most Influential to You?
A possible way to discover these 5 most influential people in your own life may be to join a community. Maybe you can join a mastermind group designed to keep you focused and on track to becoming a successful entrepreneur. For more on mastermind groups and communities check out my post on Finding Your Tribe, written by my friend Tristanne. I hope that this post starts your own minds process towards figuring out who those 5 people are for you!
Over the last months, I have constantly had this idea in mind. I strive each day to strengthen my own relationships. Also, I hope to help others grow and find how they can also start down the road to success. Because it is the end of the year, let’s all commit to finding and growing with our own 5 people. Success is within reach and able to be surpassed in 2017!
